FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (12-12, 8-4 SUNYAC) swept its third-straight doubleheader and has now won nine of its last 10 games to even its record, as the Hawks took two State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games from SUNY Fredonia (14-7, 5-4 SUNYAC) on Sunday. The Hawks defeated the Hawks in a 10-8 slugfest in the opener, and then shut out the host Blue Devils, 5-0, in the nightcap.
 
Game one was highlighted by a season-high 19 Hawk hits. All nine starters had a hit in the win, including five batters with multiple hits. Sunday's finale was the opposite of the previous game, as senior starting pitcher Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) was the star and the Hawks recorded just two hits.
 
The Hawks put it on the Blue Devils early, scoring six runs in the first three innings. Senior left fielder Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) kicked off the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning that scored senior center fielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran). Junior second baseman Kenny Gentile(Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) added another run for the Hawks in the second with a bases-loaded fielder's choice to score junior shortstop Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack).
 
Senior third baseman Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) opened the third frame with a single to left. Senior first baseman Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) followed Prescia by blasting his second homerun of the season to up the lead to four. Junior designated hitter David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) walked in the next Hawk at bat, and then senior catcher Matt Kaldon (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) knocked him in with a double to left. Carr capped off the inning with an RBI single that scored Kaldon from second, leaving the Hawks with a 6-0 lead.
 
A big home half of the third brought the Blue Devils right back into the game. With two outs, Fredonia loaded the bases after two walks and a single in the inning. Catcher Brian Sheehan was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run for the Blue Devils. First baseman Dillon Lowe followed with a double, and then center fielder Ian Gallagher singled to bring in four more runs for the Blue Devils to cut the Hawk lead to one run.
 
New Paltz added to its lead again in the fourth when Lostaglio doubled in Repetto with one out. Kaldon followed with a groundout to short that brought in Pinnola to improve the advantage to 8-5. Fredonia got the pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth with shortstop Erik Krohl's two-RBI single to center.
 
Each team added another run in the sixth inning. Kaldon picked up an RBI with a two-out single in the top of the inning, and then Lowe brought in a run for the Blue Devils on a groundout. Carr knocked in another run for the Hawks on a single in the top of the ninth to fortify the Hawks' 10-8 victory.
 
Junior starting pitcher Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) picked up the win in game one despite allowing seven runs (five earned) across five innings of work. Fredonia starter Kyle Morse shouldered the loss after 2.2 innings that saw the Hawks score six runs (five earned). Sophomore relief pitcher Brian Solomon (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) earned his second save of the season with two scoreless innings to close out the ballgame.
 
Repetto led the Hawks with four hits in six at bats in the opener. Carr, Prescia and Kaldon each batted 3-for-5. Carr picked up two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base, Prescia scored a run and Kaldon doubled twice, knocked in three runs and scored two more himself.
 
Lowe went 1-for-5 for the Blue Devils, but led the team with three RBI. Gallagher and Krohl each had two hits, knocked in two RBI and scored a run.
 
New Paltz scored all five of its runs in the top of the first in game two. Repetto kicked things off with an RBI single to score Carr from third, and then Prescia walked to load the bases with Gentile also on base after a walk. Pinnola was the fourth Hawk walked in the inning, which gave him an RBI as Gentile scored. Lostaglio followed with a single that scored Prescia and Repetto, and then Kaldon grounded out, but Pinnola was able to score the fifth Hawk run on the play.
 
The Hawks were unable to record a hit for the final six innings, but they did not need to, as Chismar was lights out for the full seven innings. He recorded his fourth win and first shutout of the season after scattering four hits and three walks across the seven frames. He also fanned nine Blue Devil batters, which improves his strikeout total to a SUNYAC-leading 62 on the season.
 
Fredonia starter Angelo Sciandra suffered the loss in Sunday's finale, allowing five runs in four innings. Fredonia pitchers combined for nine walks in the loss, but only yielded two hits across seven innings.
 
Repetto went 1-for-1 in game two with two walks, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Lostaglio picked up the only other hit for the Hawks, adding an RBI as well. Pinnola and Kaldon grabbed the other two RBI.
 
The Hawks and Blue Devils conclude their series tomorrow, April 15, with a 3 p.m. matchup in Fredonia.
