University of Maine Powers Past Terriers

ORONO, ME–The University of Maine defeated Thomas 19-3 on Tuesday night at Mahaney Diamond in Orono in a non-conference baseball matchup. Maine improves to 18-14 on the season, while the Terriers falls to 5-12. Senior Thomas Cameron (Jackson, Maine) went 1-1 with two base on balls, while driving in one run in the loss.

The Terriers NCAA Division I counterpart jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) drove home Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario), who had singled, and Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.), who had walked, with a triple. Fransoso scored on a sacrifice fly.

Cameron walked and scored on a sacrifice fly for Thomas in the top of the second inning. Maine countered with four runs. Silva doubled and scored when Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) singled. Salcedo scored when Black singled to center field. Gay walked and Fransoso followed with a double, plating Black. Gay scored the fourth run of the inning on a ground out.

Maine scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) walked and was pinch run for by Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.). Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) followed with a single through the right side. Eric White (Brewer, Maine) walked to load the bases. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) singled and Geary scored. Silva belted his first career home run, which proved to be a grand slam. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) doubled and Gay followed with a single through the left side. Bussey scored when Fransoso singled to right field. Geary doubled to left field and Gay scored. Fransoso and Geary both scored when Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) doubled to left field.

The Terriers added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Tim Bradford (Richmond, Maine), who singled, scored on a bases loaded walk. Dillon Dunbar (Saco, Maine), who walked, scored when Dillon Emerson (Concord, N.H.) grounded out.

The Black Bears plated a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Fransoso walked and scored on a Nick Bernardo sacrifice fly.

Maine added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 19-3 final. Whitten doubled and Silva followed with a single to left. Whitten scored on an error and Silva scored when Garrett Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) singled to center field.

Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) got the start and allowed a run in two innings for the Black Bears. He picks up the win and improves to 2-0.

Thomas used five pitchers in the game. Sean Twohig (Braintree, Mass.) allowed seven runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings and suffered the loss. CJ Pendleton (Saco, Maine) threw 2.1 innings, yielding just two hits, while striking out a team-leading three batters.

The Terriers will have a quick turnaround as they take on conference rival Farmington tomorrow at Thomas in a doubleheader. First pitch scheduled for 2pm.
