WATERVILLE, ME- Thomas (6-13, 5-1 NAC) spilt two games in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball doubleheader against University of Maine at Farmington (3-11, 2-8 NAC) on Wednesday afternoon at Ryan Field. The Terriers held on for a 5-4 win in the first game, while losing 3-1 in the final contest of the day.
GAME ONE
The Beavers got on the board first in the opening inning as Mello doubled to left center, driving in Wallingford. Thomas would be held hitless throughout the first three innings by the UMF starter Ben Pearson, but erupted for two runs in the bottom of the fourth with Dillon Emerson (Concord, N.H.) driving in Thomas Cameron (Jackson, Maine) Cody Vigue (Skowhegan, Maine) on a double to center.
The home side would add three runs in the fifth, as Emerson again would pick up to RBI, this time singling to right field. A fly out to center field by Zack Groat (West Bath, Maine) would carry enough to score Vigue from third.
UMF would plate home two in the sixth, with a single by Tom Grady to right field. A Terrier error with two outs and a runner on third would result in the other run, as Ethan Jean crossed home plate.
A seventh inning triple by Collin Mello would give Farmington a last inning run, but Vigue was able to strike out pinch hitter Zach Keene to pick up his second save of the season.
Jake Chamblee (South Berwick, Maine) picked up the win, pitching six innings while yielding two earned runs with five strikeouts.
Pearson was charged with the loss, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up five earned runs while striking out six.
GAME TWO
Farmington would take advantage of the Terriers miscues in the first inning, plating home two runs. Dale Winchenbach would score on passed ball, while Matthew Woodbury scored from third on an error.
Another error by the Terriers in the top of the fourth would result in a UMF run, as Brian Jenkins, who singled to left, would steal both second and third, then advance home on a misthrow by the catcher. Thomas would add their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a double to right center by Emerson, scoring Vigue from third.
Thomas would not be able to rally in the later innings, picking up just one additional hit in the fifth inning.
Dillon Dunbar (Saco, Maine) would suffer the loss, pitching a complete game, with one earned run and three strikeouts.
Joe Sullivan got a complete game victory, giving up four hits and one earned run, with six strikeouts.
Thomas returns to conference action this weekend as they travel to New England College for two doubleheaders over the weekend.
