Carthage Sweeps Elmhurst, 3-0 and 7-0, on April 20

The Carthage College baseball team (14-14, 7-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) got to .500 for the first time since the season's opening weekend by sweeping a Saturday, April 20 doubleheader from CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (12-13, 4-8 CCIW), 3-0 and 7-0,at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.  The two teams conclude the series with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday, April 21 at Butterfield Park in Elmhurst, Ill.

Carthage took  1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Pusateri.  An RBI-single by Marc Mantucca in the fifth put the Red Men up, 2-0, and another run-scoring single by Mantucca in the seventh made it a 3-0 game.  That's the way it stayed.  Carthage pitcher Jeremy Salzman (Jr., Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove, 2-3) worked the first six innings to get the win, and he blanked the Bluejays on three hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.  Mitch Lochen (Sr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) took over in the seventh and shut out Elmhurst on one hit over the final three frames to earn his second save.  Brian Marquis (1-4) took the loss.  Carthage's Marc Mantucca (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Central) went three-for-four with two RBI.

In the nightcap, Carthage broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with solo home runs by Kyle Pusateri (Sr., Schaumburg, Ill.) and Mike Merritt (Jr., Racine, Wis./Lutheran).  Mike Gentile drove in a run in the fifth with a double and later scored on an infield error, putting the Red Men up, 4-0.  Gentile singled in a run in the fifth to up the margin to 5-0.  Carthage made it 7-0 in the seventh on an RBI-single by Stevo Kraynak and an RBI-double by Drew Bailey.  Mike Merritt, Drew Bailey and Mike Gentile each had two hits for the Red Men, with Gentile driving in two runs.

Starting pitcher Josh Daniels (Jr., Elk Grove, Ill., 1-1) worked into the eighth inning before giving way to Sam Wilhelms.  Daniels blanked the Bluejays on nine hits, four walks and seven strikeouts over seven innings.  Wilhelms allowed just one hit over the final two inning.  The losing pitcher was Jeff Guzzi (1-4).
