Danbury, Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams oulasted the Western Connecticut State University Colonials, 11-6, in 11 innings in baseball action this evening at Westside Field. Trinity took advantage of Western Connecticut fielding miscues to score its final seven runs after the Colonials twice committed errors with two outs in an inning. Trinity improves to 18-14 with its fourth win in four days, while the Colonials drop to 11-16.

Trinity jumped out to an early lead when senior captain OF Mike Rueger (Teaneck, N.J.) hit a one-out home run over the fence in left field. Senior captain 1B Joe Papa (Stoneham, Mass.) drilled a two-out double in the gap in left-center, and, after a walk, sophomore Scott Huley (Greenwich, Conn.) drove in the second Trinity run with a double over the head of the Western left fielder. A single to left by senior Brian Ginsberg (Westwood, Mass.) scored two more Bantam runs for a 4-0 Trinity lead. In the Western Connecticut half of the first inning, senior Chris Alberto (Trumbull, Conn.) drew a one-out walk and scored on a double in the gap in left-center by senior Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, Conn.). A liner to left, an error on an infield pop-up, and a walk loaded the bases for Western Connecticutwith two outs, but a shallow fly to right field ended the Colonial threat, making the score 4-1 after one.

Trinity got a leadoff double in the third, but Western starter CJ Sousa (Danbury, Conn.) struck out the next two Bantam batters and got the final out on a grounder to short. In the fourth, Sousa started well, striking out the first two Trinity batters, but back-to-back singles brought reliever Joe Fedak (Sandy Hook, Conn.) in from the bullpen. Fedak retired the next batter to end the inning, keeping the margin 4-1 in favor of the visitors. In the bottom of the fifth frame, sophomore James Russell (Darien, Conn.) lined a one-out single to left and junior Jeff John (Trumbull, Conn.) hit a double to left-center, putting runners on second and third with one out. After an intentional pass to Bierfeldt, junior Bobby Coyne (Clinton, Conn.) hit a single through the left side of the infield to score two runs. Senior Bill Eannotti (Shelton, Conn.) followed with a single to left, scoring Bierfeldt from second to tie the score at 4-4 after five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, junior John Fracker (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Russell. A single to left by John scored Fracker from second and after a ground-out put runners at first and third with two outs, Bierfeldt drove in the second run of the inning with a sharp grounder over the third base bag. After six innings, Western's lead was 6-4. In the top of the seventh, Fedak retired the first two Trinity batters, but an error on a ground ball to third kept Trinity alive, and senior OF Marc Crowley (Andover, Mass.) tied the game with a two-RBI single.

After scoreless eighth, ninth, and 10th innings, Trinity senior Alex OF Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) singled to start the 11th. A successful bunt attempt moved Almeida to second, and a walk and a strikeout put runners on first and second with two outs. A sharp grounder to short by senior Evan Sternberg (Glen Ridge, N.J.) resulted in an error and one run scored and Trinity had runners at the corners with two outs. First-year Matt Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.) drew an RBI walk, and sophomore Adam Moossmann (East Northport, N.Y.) delivered a two-run single. Mortimer scored the game's final run on a double steal, and Bantam senior RHP Ben Goldberg (Plainview, N.Y.) retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to record his fifth straight inning of scoreless relief to collect the win.
