@OW_Panthers Baseball shuts down CCNY

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team took control early and cruised to a 10-0 non-conference victory over the visiting CCNY Beavers Tuesday evening from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury improves to 19-13-1 on the season with their sixth straight win as the Beavers slipped to 4-25.

Old Westbury starter Tyler Kapela (3-1) and reliever Alex DiSanto combined forces to record Old Westbury's third shutout of the season, holding CCNY to just three hits on the day.  Kapela logged four innings and struck out three before DiSanto closed out the final three frames, striking out five, to record his ninth save of the season. 

Old Westbury posted three runs and stole six of their 11 bases in the opening inning.  Paul Valerio led off with a bunt single, stole both second and third before Brian Walsh laced a triple to right center to break the scoring ice.  Two batters later, Michael Parziale registered one of his three RBI groundouts of the day, scoring Walsh for a 2-0 lead.  Jacob Coners followed with an RBI groundout of his own to send Jonathan Pagan home for the third run of the game. 

Parziale drove in Pagan in the third on an infield grounder to put Old Westbury up 4-0.

Steve Mare opened the fourth inning scoring gates with a run-scoring single and four batters later scored on a wild pitch.  Parziale added his third RBI groundout and Coners followed with an RBI chopper single up the middle to score Pagan.        

Old Westbury tacked on two more runs in the fifth to close out the scoring.  Robert Crocitto was pushed across home plate on a Valerio fielder's choice and Thomas Whitenack lifted a sacrifice fly out to right to score Joseph Walsh for a 10-0 lead.

Valerio (2-4, RBI, 2 R) and Mare (2-2, RBI, R, SB) both paced Old Westbury with multiple hits while Pagan scored a game-high three runs.  Valerio and Pagan (1-1, 3 R, 2 BB),each stole three bases and Alex Abanavas (0-1, 2 BB) followed with two.  Parziale finished 0-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. 

Max Mueller (0-1) was saddled with CCNY's loss, surrendering nine runs on eight hits and five runs over four innings of mound work.  

LEHMAN LIGHTNING UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS ON SENIOR DAY: Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Wednesday (April 24) at 6 p.m. when they take on the Lehman Lightning in non-conference action at home on Senior Day from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.   

Prior to first pitch, seniors Matthew  Andress, Stephen Chapter, Steve Mare, Peter Romeo, James Roubal, Paul Valerio, Brian Walsh and Tim Walsh will be honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to Old Westbury Athletics.
