CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball team slowed down the potent bats of the DeSales University Bulldogs for most of the afternoon, but could not get their own offense going in a 4-2 loss on Wednesday afternoon at Butz Field.

Scranton (18-17) held DeSales to four runs on 10 hits, including eight singles. The Bulldogs (27-8) entered the game hitting .334 and averaging 8.3 runs per game, but were held well below that output.

DeSales jumped ahead with a run in the bottom of the second, but Scranton took the lead with two in the top of the third. Freshman left fielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) led off with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by sophomore second baseman Matt Maghini (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand). Sophomore second baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) followed with an RBI sac fly to tie the game.

The Royals then took the lead on an RBI triple from junior center fielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford). But he was stranded at third as the Bulldogs got the final two outs to end the threat.

DeSales tied it at 2 with a run in the bottom half of the third, then scored twice in the fifth for the final runs of the game.

Maghini finished with four hits and a run scored, and Healy had two hits and scored a run for the Royals.

Senior first baseman Brian Mauro (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) singled, doubled and drove in two runs for DeSales.

Scranton is back on the diamond on Saturday when it hosts Catholic University in a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at noon at Connell Park.
