The Buena Vista baseball team closed out its regular season schedule on Monday afternoon with a doubleheader split at Loras College en route to a 3-1 series win. The Duhawks took the opener, 3-1, before BVU rolled off four runs in the 10th inning of the nightcap to take the finale, 8-4 (10 inn.).
An RBI single by Jesse Munsterman in the top of the first inning of game one gave the Beavers the early 1-0 advantage, but the Duhawks responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half to take a 3-1 lead.
From there, BVU left at least one runner on in five of the last six innings, but couldn't push any runs across.
Junior Joe Paletta doubled twice and finished with three of the team's seven hits in the contest. He also scored the team's lone run.
Scott Harris was charged with the loss and is 1-3 overall. He pitched two innings and allowed all three runs on three hits, while walking three.
BVU scored single runs in the second and third innings of the nightcap to take the early 2-0 lead. A two-run double by Paletta in the fifth extended the margin to 4-0.
The Duhakws slowly clawed their way back, getting two runs in the fifth before adding single runs in the seventh and eighth to square things up.
After each team left a pair of runners on base in the ninth, it was BVU pulling through in the 10th, getting four runs, including a two-run single from senior Alex Davis and a two-run double by junior Weston Foxx.
Foxx finished with a team-high three hits in the contest and also scored twice, while Paletta added two more hits and drove in three. Munsterman also turned in two hits, as did freshman Brandon Wessels.
As a team, the Beavers outhit the Kohawks, 13-5.
Munsterman also got some work in on the mound, pitching the final three innings to pick up his first win of the year. He allowed just one unearned run on one hit and struck out three.
Adam Bernstorf got the start and went four innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, despite walking four and hitting a pair.
Buena Vista wins 12 of its final 15 games to close out the regular season and finish 23-17 overall (15-13 IIAC). The team will now be the #3 seed in this week's IIAC Tournament and will face the sixth-seed Duhakws on Thursday afternoon, May 9, at 1:00pm inside of Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
