Eighth-Seeded Daniel Webster Posts First-Ever NCAA Triumph In 10-4 Win Over #5 MIT

Harwich, MA --- A trio of seniors in the lineup and one on the mound led the way for eighth-seeded Daniel Webster as they defeated #5 MIT 10-4 in an elimination game at Whitehouse Field in the 2013 NCAA Division III New England Regional baseball tournament.

The victory was the first for Daniel Webster (29-11) in the NCAA Division III tournament across any sport.

For the baseball team, it was their first win in four tries, as they made their NCAA debut a year ago at the Mid-Atlantic Regional. MIT (27-13) becomes the first team eliminated from the Harwich Regional and are still looking for their first NCAA baseball victory after three tries.

The Eagles will advance to play in the next elimination game on Friday at 1:00 PM when they will take on the loser of tonight's third-seeded Endicott vs. #2 Wheaton match-up.

Senior Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, RI) hit the first home run of the year for the Eagles, a two-run shot during a five-run seventh inning. Lizotte was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while fellow senior teamates Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, NH) and Elliot Kilgore (Milford, NH) had a pair of hits apiece.

Bonin had three runs batted in and scored once while Kilgore crossed the plate twice and drove in a run himself.

Senior Zack Hurley (Hudson, NH) pitched five 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Eagles, and struck out three batters while giving up five hits and four walks, while earning the win to improve to 5-1 on the year.

Engineers senior starter Aric Dama (Winfield, IL) fell to 7-3 on the year after lasting four 1/3 innings scattering eight hits and allowing five runs, four of them earned. Dama struck out two batters, did not issue a walk, and displayed an impressive move to first base, picking off two runners in the fourth inning.

Daniel Webster entered the seventh inning ahead 5-4, but Bonin scored on Lizotte's homer after delivering a two-run single, which scored Kilgore and sophomore Kyle Brigham (Hudson, NH). Kilgore had gotten the scoring started for the Eagles with an RBI single to plate senior Josh Chasse (Haverhill, MA), who scored twice and drove in a run himself.

The Engineers jumped ahead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run homer to left field by sophomore Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, NC), who had three hits to lead the Engineers, as did MIT junior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, UT).

The teams exchanged runs in the second inning, Daniel Webster thanks to an RBI triple to right center by Bonin that scored Kilgore. who had reached on an error. The Engineers matched that single run when senior James McKinney (Wakefield, RI) singled home sophomore KJ Parent (Knoxville, TN). McKinney and Parent each had two of MIT's 13 hits.

The Eagles grabbed a 5-4 lead with four runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning. The big blow came from a two-run single through the ride side by senior Darrik Marstaller (Spofford, NH), which followed an RBI double down the left field line by classmate Josh Chasse (Haverhill, MA).

MIT loaded the bases in both the fifth and sixth innings with just one out and trailing 5-4, but were unable to push across a run to tie the game, as they ended the game leaving twelve runners on base.
