Danville, Va. – Marymount University's baseball team split a doubleheader on the road at Averett in the program's first ever games on Sunday. The Saints dropped the opener 8-7 before rallying to shutout the Cougars 3-0 in the nightcap.
The Saints dropped a heartbreaker in their first ever game, unable to hold on to a 7-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bret Phillips went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and knocked in four runs for the Blue and White. Lorenzo Calderon, Jake Coleman and Gannon White each added a pair of hits for Marymount.
Jake Brown tossed a solid game in the Saints debut, allowing just four hits in five innings of work without giving up an earned run. He struck out six and walked just win in the no-decision.
In the second game, Brandon Orbe pitched a complete came shutout for the first win in Saints baseball history. He scattered seven hits over seven innings while striking out a pair.
Coleman and White both logged a pair of hits with White knocking the first home run in MU history, a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning.
Marymount returns to the diamond on Saturday as it travels to face Hampden-Sydney in non-conference action.
