A bases-loaded walk to freshman Kyle Jacobs completed a 4-3 comeback win for the LeTourneau University baseball team over Southwestern University on Friday night at Conrad-Vernon Field.

The YellowJackets (1-0), who entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 3-2 and having stranded 12 runners on base in the first eight innings, orchestrated a rally for the win. Juniors Caleb Pritchett and Ryan Bertram each had two hits and Jacobs finished the night with three walks for LeTourneau in the win. Senior Jordan Price came out of the bullpen to hold Southwestern to just two hits in 2.1 innings of work for the win.

Defensively, Pritchett also had his hand in a double play from center field in the fourth inning when he caught a runner from Southwestern attempting to score from third on a fly ball.

The Pirates (0-5) were led by the two-hit effort of Zach Lynch but it was a tough night for the Southwestern bullpen. In 2.2 innings of work, they surrendered six of the 10 LeTourneau hits and gave up three walks in the loss.

Each team plated a run in the first inning and the game remained tied until Southwestern scored twice in the top of the seventh. The first run came in on a RBI double by Ben Little and the second came in on a RBI single by Lynch which ended the day for LeTourneau starter senior Curt Copeland.

The YellowJackets started the comeback in the eighth when senior David Perkins scored after an error by the Pirates. To start the inning, Perkins singled up the middle. He moved to second on a graduate student Garrett Methvin single; next, senior Chuck Daugherty hit a ground ball to third that ricocheted into the outfield to score Perkins but an alert Methvin was thrown out at third on the play. However, the YellowJackets failed to get the game-tying run across despite having the bases loaded.

When LeTourneau came to the plate in the ninth, they started the comeback with two outs. Micah Montes started the rally with a single up the middle. A hit-by-pitch and a walk loaded the bases for Daugherty. 14 pitches later to Daugherty, he reached on a walk to tie the game at 3 and to bring Jacobs to the plate. The freshman from Leander settled in, worked a full count to eventually receive ball four and complete the come-from-behind win for the YellowJackets.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Conrad-Vernon Field.
