More news about: Keystone

Hampden-Sydney, VA – Keystone College scored four runs in the sixth inning to erase a 4-0 deficit to Hampden-Sydney College on Friday afternoon, but Tigers scored five runs in the home half of the seventh inning to pull away with a 9-4 victory, spoiling the Giants season opener  at the 7th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Ty Cobb Ballpark.  Hampden-Sydney improves to 5-2 on the season while Keystone, who entered the 2014 season ranked 17th in the country, will now look for their first win of the season on Saturday when they take on Wesley College.

Hampden-Sydney jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.  Jeff Gray hit a solo home run before Nathan Chamberlin doubled to bring in another run.  Reggie Johnson followed with a two-run homer to make it a four-run game in favor of the hosts.

After being limited to one hit over the first five innings, Keystone's offense came alive in the top of the sixth as the Giants were able to level the game at 4-4.  Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) doubled home Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) before Dan Denton (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) followed with a single that plate Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and Bzozowski.  A single by Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) brought home Denton with the tying run.

The Tigers then plated five runs in the home half of the seventh inning on four hits to give their pitching staff a five-run cushion.  Hampden-Sydney held the Giants hitless over the final two innings and limited them to just one base runner to notch the victory.

Matt Hinson was credited with the win for the Tigers after pitching two perfect innings in relief of starter Billy Nixon, who allowed four runs on six hits while striking out for Keystone batters.  Chamberlin led Hampden-Sydney with three hits while Johnson drove in three runs in the win.

Rob Blanc (Sandy Hook, CT/Trumbull) went six innings in his Keystone debut, surrendering four runs on six hits while fanning five batters without issuing a walk.  Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley) suffered the loss after being charged with five runs on four hits before turning the ball over to John Kranick (Jessup, PA/Valley View), who held the Tigers hitless over the final 1.2 innings.

Catherina went 2-4 at the plate while Denton's pair of RBIs paced the Giants' offense in the loss.

Keystone will look to break into the win column on Saturday when they take on Wesley College at 3:00 p.m. on Day 2 of this weekend's tournament.
