Fifth Inning Comeback Drives Hornets Past Greensboro, 6-4

GREENSBORO, NC – The Lynchburg College baseball team got a key fifth-inning rally and six scoreless innings by junior Brandon Miller out of the bullpen to down Greensboro College, 6-4, Tuesday in non-conference action.

Colton Steber was solid early for the Hornets in his first collegiate start. The freshman allowed a hit in each of the first two innings while striking out three.

The Hornets struck first as Dustin Arrowood singled and stole second to start the second inning. Jake Tanner poked the ball into the outfield to score Arrowood for the 1-0 lead.

Lynchburg added a second run in the third when Joe Rogers was hit by a pitch with two outs already on the board. A failed pickoff attempt sent Rogers all the way to third where Jay Kenyon came through in the clutch with an RBI-single.

Greensboro got to Steber the second time through the lineup. After sitting down the eight and nine-hole hitters for the first two outs, Steber walked Jordan Powell. A Cody York single and another walk loaded the bases for Jon Krecicki, the Pride's leading hitter. The senior singled to tie up the game and Blake Throneburg followed with another two-RBI double to assume a 4-2 lead.

Steber struck out Brandon Soden to end the threat before the Hornets turned to Miller in the fourth.

Arrowood led off the fourth with a walk and, just like in the second inning, stole his way into scoring position. Drew Taylor peppered a ball to shortstop where an error allowed Taylor to reach and Arrowood to score.

The speed of the Hornet lineup came into play again in the fifth inning when Joe Rogers led off with a single and swiped second. Kenyon singled through the left side to put runners on the corners where Arrowood's sacrifice fly tied the game back up at four. Jake Tanner followed with a double to score Kenyon for the winning run.

Rob Tomasulo added an RBI double to right-center in the eighth inning for the insurance tally.

Miller (2-1) went six strong innings for Lynchburg, striking out nine while allowing two hits and not issuing a walk. Tanner, Kenyon, and Rogers each had a pair of hits for the Hornets.

Kristopher Peeden allowed three runs, one earned, in four innings of work while striking out five in his first action of the season for Greensboro (1-5).

Lynchburg (7-1) returns home Saturday for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener against Washington and Lee University (6-2). First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
