VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.---Corey Wallace hit two grand-slam home runs in game two to cap Guilford College's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader sweep over Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon. The Quakers took game one, 13-10, and won the nightcap, 15-4.
Wallace is the 12th baseball student-athlete in NCAA Division III history to hit two grand slams in a game. He is the first since DeSales University's Mark Cohan hit two in a game in 2004.
In game one, Charles Noble countered a 4-0 Virginia Wesleyan start with a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning. The Quakers' rally continued into the top of the fifth when John Macon Smith hit a single to cut the Marlin lead to 4-3. Grayson Tuttle gave the Quakers the advantage two batters later when he doubled in two runs. Noble added his third RBI of the game with a run-scoring single. Michael Whited capped the inning with a sacrifice fly that increased the lead to 7-4. Tuttle capped the Quakers' eight-run rally in the middle innings with a single up the middle in the top of the sixth.
After a four-run bottom of the sixth inning for the Marlins to tie the game, 8-8, Wallace hit his first home run of the day to restore the Quakers lead to 10-8.
After the Marlins struck back with two more runs of their own, the Quakers rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth, led by Smith's two-RBI single up the middle. Wallace added another single up the middle for his third RBI of the game to extend the lead, 13-10.
Justin Morrison (2-1) took the game-one win for the Quakers by throwing the final one and a third innings, striking out two while giving up no runs and no hits. Borja Jones-Berasaluce through five and a third innings, striking out five. Chad Wagoner threw two and a third innings of middle relief.
The Quakers continued their momentum into game two, when Smith singled up the middle to claim an early lead on his fourth RBI of the day.
After Virginia Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, the Quakers produced a three-run rally as Whited and Dan Ditota both brought in a run a piece off errors in the middle infield. Gabe Mirabelli added a RBI-single giving the Quakers the lead, 4-2, after top of the third inning.
The Quakers countered Austin Gammon's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning with a five-run rally in the top of the sixth inning, led by Wallace's first grand slam of game two. Tyler Petersen added a RBI-double to left center field to increase the lead, 8-3. Ditota tacked on another run in the top of the seventh by scoring on a wild pitch.
The Quakers countered Brett Sutryk's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning with another five-run rally in the top of the ninth inning. Herc Ingels started the rally with a RBI-single to increase the lead, 11-4. Wallace capped his 11-RBI afternoon with his second grand slam of the game and his third home run of the doubleheader.
Drew Crawford (1-1) threw eight innings in the win for the Quakers. He scattered four runs on seven hits and struck out four batters. Justin Jordan threw a perfect ninth inning, striking out the final batter.
The Quakers (8-6, 2-0 ODAC) return home Wednesday to face Methodist University at 2:30 p.m.
