No. 19 Bridgewater Splits ODAC Twinbill With Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND , Va. - After losing the opener, the Bridgewater College Eagles salvaged a split Saturday afternoon against Randolph-Macon in an early season Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball showdown. After the Yellow Jackets took Game 1, 11-5, Nick Corbin and Kyle Henshaw combined on a four-hitter to pitch the Eagles to a 3-1 victory in the second game.

The Yellow Jackets took advantage of two Bridgewater errors in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead against Corbin.

Bridgewater gave Corbin the lead with two runs in the fourth and then added another run in the fifth.

Brendan Howell walked to lead off the top of the fourth and, with two out, Kenner Berry was hit by a pitch. Tyler Hoffman then scored Howell with a single, tying the score at 1-1. Cavin Clyde followed with a double to chase homer Berry, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Nick Fulk led off the fifth inning with a triple and scored on Howell's fly ball to left to put the Eagles on top, 3-1.

After giving up the unearned run in the first, Corbin was in complete control. Over the next seven innings he gave up just three hits. He finished the game with five strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Henshaw pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save. He struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Bridgewater finished Game 2 with eight hits. Fulk and Clyde had two hits each.

In the opener, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second. Tim Benjamin walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on a double by Michael Kroll. Michael Wallman chased home both runners with a double for a 2-0 Randolph-Macon lead.

The Eagles tied the score with two runs in the top of the third. Hunter Hensley led off with a double and moved to third when Derrik Walling's grounder was misplayed for an error. Hensley scored on a sacrifice fly by Fulk, trimming the deficit to 2-1. Walling later scored on another Randolph-Macon error to tie the score.

The Yellow Jackets broke the game open in the fifth with five runs off Bridgewater starter Corey Armentrout.

Travis Lodge doubled to lead off the off the inning and scored on Mitchell Keeler's one-out single to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 lead. With two outs, singles by Benjamin and Michael Trentham and a double by Kroll accounted for three more runs and ended the day for Armentrout. Nate Meiners greeted Bridgewater reliever Tyler Conley with a run-scoring single to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-2 lead.

The Yellows Jackets scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to lead 11-2 before Bridgewater got on the board again with three runs in the ninth. The Eagles put two runners on with consecutive singles by Hensley and Walling. Fulk plated one run with a single and later in the inning Howell added a two-run single to account for Bridgewater's final runs.

The Eagles had 11 hits in the first game with Walling, Bay Liskey, Justin Petock and Hensley contributing two hits each.
