DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's baseball team split a doubleheader with SUNY Oswego in the Wolverines home opener on Saturday afternoon at Bob Reed Field.  Wesley blanked the Lakers, 5-0, in the opener before falling short in a seventh-inning rally, 7-6, in game two.

Cory Smith went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs in the victory while Zach Stuart got the win on the hill.  Stuart pitched six shutout innings and struck out three while allowing just six hits before giving way to Brad Walker in the seventh.

The Wolverines tallied three runs in the very first inning as Trevor Mears, Adam Darling and Stan Zulkowski all drove in runs.  Smith and Eric Speidel led off with back-to-back singles before Mears drove in Smith with a single to left field.  After Conner Gobright reached on an error to load the bases, Darling hit a long fly ball to center field to score Mears from third.  Zulkowski followed up with a base knock which scored Gobright.

With Stuart rolling, Wesley added two more runs in the fourth when Smith doubled down the left field line.  Scoring on the play was Zulkowski and Tyler Hunter who reached earlier in the inning.

Along with Smith's three hits, Mears and Matt Domian each had multi-hit games in the opener.

Sophomore pitcher Eric Willey started the second game for the Wolverines and made quick work of the Lakers in the first two innings but gave up five runs on five hits and an error in the third.  Wesley was able to get three of those runs back in the fourth on RBIs by Mears, Gobright and Darling.

Oswego State answered with two more in the sixth to extend its lead to 7-3 but Wesley rallied in its final at bat before falling just one run short.

Facing a relief pitcher for the seventh, Connor Springsteen led off the frame with a single before advancing to second on a passed ball.  Hunter then singled Springsteen to third and Smith reached on a catcher's interference call.  Still with nobody out, Speidel lined a shot right to the centerfielder which scored Springsteen.  Mears then grounded out to move both Hunter and Smith into scoring position before a wild pitched allowed Hunter to score to cut the deficit to just two runs.

With Smith on third and two outs, Gobright beat out a single to the shortstop but was forced out at second on a ground ball by Darling to end the game.

Willey received the loss by allowing five earned runs over 5.1 innings.  He allowed nine hits and three walks while striking out two.

The Wolverines host New Jersey City at 11 am on Sunday, March 2 for a single game.  NJCU and SUNY Oswego will then play a neutral site game right after.
