The Oglethorpe baseball team gave up five runs, four of them unearned, in the fourth inning of Sunday's game against Berry at Anderson Field and never recovered, losing to the Vikings, 6-5. The loss drops the Petrels to 5-5 on the season, 1-2 in SAA play.

The Petrels took separate one-run leads in the second and third innings of this game. When first baseman Patrick Kulick doubled home left fielder Andre Turnquest in the third, they had a 2-1 lead. However, the five-run third inning put them behind 6-2. Four of the runs in the inning were unearned after a costly error on a play that would have gotten the Petrels out of the inning.

Starting pitcher Justin Dempsey suffered the loss after allowing five runs on five hits over 3-2/3 innings, but only one of the runs he allowed was earned.

The Petrels started whittling away the Berry lead. They scored a single run in the fourth on a Hunter Riley RBI single, then got two more back in the fifth on a two-run single from second baseman Keith Dearden. However, neither team would tally over the game's final four innings, with both bullpens shutting down the opposing lineup.

The Petrels got a good day at the plate from Dearden, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Kulick didn't have quite as good a day as he had been having, but did go 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

The Petrels will take on crosstown-rival Emory Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. on Anderson Field before travelling to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Rhodes in next weekend's SAA action.
