Tomcats earn first win at Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team scored all the runs it needed in the fourth and fifth innings as the Tomcats picked up their first win of the season, defeating Ohio Northern University, 5-2, Monday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Tomcats got on the scoreboard first, as sophomore Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) led off the fourth inning with a single through the left side of the infield.  The Grove City, Pa. native scored all the way from first on a deep fly ball to left center off the bat of senior Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) that was dropped by an outstretched Polar Bear centerfielder, and an errant relay throw allowed Doody to motor around the bases for Thiel's first run of the game. Schiavoni advanced to second, and later scored on a Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) single into right field to put the Tomcats up 2-0 after four innings.

Thiel added to its lead in the bottom half of the fifth, as the Tomcats manufactured three runs on two hits and two errors, with a RBI single by Doody highlighting the scoring that gave the home team a 5-0 lead after five frames.

Starting pitcher Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) kept the Ohio Northern bats at bay for 6 and 2/3rd innings, allowing one run on nine hits while striking out four and walking just one. The junior right-hander threw 108 pitches to pick up his first win of the season.

The Tomcats bullpen picked up where Meyers left off, as sophomore Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) threw one and a third innings of no-hit relief, and fellow sophomore Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) threw an inning of three-hit relief to slam the door on the Polar Bears in the ninth.

Two Tomcats recorded multi-hit games, with Doody leading the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Smith continued his early season tear, as he is now 5-for-8 at the dish in two games this season with three RBIs.

Thiel returns to action on March 4, when they take on Heidelberg University at 10 a.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.
