York (Pa.) Offense Erupts for 19 Runs in Tuesday Win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The York College baseball squad didn't need any late innings heroics on Tuesday afternoon as they scored early and often en route to a 19-3 non-conference win over Eastern University in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Spartans improve to 2-1 while the Eagles fall to 0-4.

The Green and White jumped on the Eagles early as they tallied three runs in the first, two runs in the second and six runs in the third to take an 11-0 lead.

In the first, Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) stroked a two run triple and then scored on a Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) RBI ground out.

Junior J.J. Oleniacz (Great Falls, Va./Langley) plated the first run of the second inning with an RBI single. Chris Turrisi (Washington Township, N.J./St. Joseph's) then scored on an Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) sacrifice fly.

The Spartans took advantage of two Eastern errors in the six-run third. Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) had a two-run double in the inning while Oleniacz also had a run batted in.

After a scoreless fourth, York pushed the lead to 12-0 on a Herr RBI single in the top of the fifth. The Green and White put up another five spot as the Eagles committed another two errors in the sixth inning. Freshman Logan Countryman (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) had a two-run single to right to highlight the frame.

Eastern got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the seventh but York got two of those runs back in the top of the eighth to close out the scoring.

Senior David Walker (Hanover, Pa./South Western) was the beneficiary of the offensive production but he didn't really need it as he twirled five shutout innings. Walker faced just three batters over the minimum in a very strong performance. Walker allowed two hits with one walk while he struck out six as he improved to 1-1.

Jordan Miller was the first of seven Eastern pitchers in the game as he tossed two innings, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts as he falls to 0-1.

York banged out a season-high 19 hits as 11 players recorded at least one knock in the game. Oleniacz led the way with a career-high four hits while he also had three RBI and three runs scored.  Miele added two triples, two RBI and two runs scored. Herr added two hits, three RBI and a run scored while Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) and Turrisi each had two hits. Turrisi scored a career-high three runs and Steffy denting the plate twice. Steve Miller (Massapequea, N.Y./Plainedge) came off the bench and banged out two hits in the win.

Andrew Check picked up three of the seven Eastern hits while he also had an RBI. Ryan McMenamin added a hit and an RBI while Joe Grato was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Spartans continue their spring trip in Myrtle Beach tomorrow when they face Wilkes in a 12:00 pm game.
