Union, N.J. (3/5/14) – Southpaw Dan Hansen tossed six innings of two hit ball to earn his first win of the season as the Kean University baseball team topped Eastern Connecticut State University, 4-1, Wednesday afternoon.
Hansen (1-0) allowed just one unearned run with six strikeouts and no walks to help the #3/5 Cougars improve to 6-1 on the year. Junior Chuck Vogt (0-1) suffered the loss in the opener for the Warriors as he allowed two unearned runs in three innings. He gave up two hits and two walks.
Kean opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as sophomore Ryan Kelley singled home senior Shane Alvarez who reached via catcher's interference. Eastern Connecticut then tied the game up at one-all in their half of the third as junior Corey Keane lined a two out triple into the gap. He then scored on a throwing miscue by the Cougars that extended the inning.
The Cougars took the lead for good in their next at-bat as Alvarez again crossed the plate on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of junior Andy Lopez. Kean added insurance in the seventh with two more runs with an RBI single by catcher James Lyczkowski and later a passed ball.
Junior Charles Thielmann picked up the save as he tossed one batter over the minimum in the ninth, striking out two.
Kean now heads west hoping for some warm weather in the state of California where they will play six games over the next week, beginning on Friday afternoon at the University of LaVerne.
