More news about: Oglethorpe

The Oglethorpe baseball team had a tough day Saturday, getting swept by Rhodes in a doubleheader in Memphis, Tenn. The Stormy Petrels lost 5-1 in Game 1 and were blown out 12-1 in Game 2.

The Petrels totaled just four hits on the day, two in each game. They fell behind early in both, as well, and were unable to recover.

In Game 1, left-handed starter Kyle Mitchell gave up five runs on eight hits over four innings and wound up suffering the loss. The home-standing Lynx scored all five runs over the game's first four innings and took a 5-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Petrels were unable to get anything going against the Rhodes starting pitcher. They scored a run in the eighth when first baseman Frank Sarno singled, catcher Hunter Riley walked and designated hitter Patrick Kulick reached on a two-base error, but that was it. Both Oglethorpe hits in the game came off the bat of Sarno, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In Game 2, the Petrels fell behind 3-0 in the first, but got a run back in the second. Center fielder Vernon Trice walked and stole second and right fielder Casey Innis walked. That brought Sarno to the plate again and he came through with his third hit of the day. His single to right field scored Trice and pulled the Petrels to within two, 3-1.

However, the Lynx got the run back in the bottom half of the inning and went on to score four more runs over the next two innings to take an 8-1 lead. Rhodes was able to cruise from there for the 11-run victory.

Freshman right-hander Ryan Brennan suffered the loss in Game 2, allowing three runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning.

The losses drop the Petrels to 6-7 on the season, 1-4 in SAA play. They'll complete their three-game stay in Memphis Sunday when they take on Rhodes at noon Eastern. They'll then welcome Sewanee in to Anderson Field for a three-game SAA series Thursday and Friday of next week.
