YellowJackets Take Two from Hardin-Simmons to Complete Series Sweep

More news about: LeTourneau

The LeTourneau University baseball team extended its winning streak to five and picked up its third-straight ASC series with a 9-2, 10-4 doubleheader sweep of Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday.

The YellowJackets (13-1, 6-1 ASC) continue to exemplify a perfect example of team success – strong pitching on the mound and an aggressive approach at the plate.

The Cowboys (6-6, 4-5 ASC) were held to three hits in the contest.

After giving up an unearned run in the first inning to the visitors, LeTourneau scored nine unanswered runs over the course of the next six innings en route to the 9-2 win.

The offense had nine hits including two from Chris Bertram to give plenty of support to starter Cody Whitley, who pitched six solid innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five to raise his record to 3-0. Whitley gave up hits in just the first and fifth inning.

In the second inning with a 1-0 deficit, the YellowJackets loaded the bases to set the stage for Chris Bertram, who cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to put LeTourneau ahead 3-1. A Quinn Brankin sacrifice fly stretched the lead to 4-1 in the third inning.

The YellowJackets scored twice in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning for a 9-1 lead. The Cowboys picked up a run off reliever Ben Boles in the ninth for the final margin.

Next, LeTourneau travels to Shreveport, Louisiana to face Centenary on Tuesday, Mar. 11 in a 6 p.m. contest.
