Giants Drop a Pair to St. Scholastica

Fort Pierce, FL - The College of St. Scholastica, the defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference champions and a 2013 NCAA Regional participant, defeated Keystone College in a pair of games on Sunday in a doubleheader between teams who are receiving votes in the latest national rankings.  The Saints won the opener 8-4 before rallying from a 5-0 deficit to claim the nightcap, 6-5 in nine innings.  St. Scholastica levels their record at 3-3 on the spring while the Giants slip to 2-6 on the young season.
 
In Sunday's opener, the Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Keystone made it a one run game with a pair of runs in the home second.  Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) doubled to bring home Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) before Chris Muniz (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) scored on an error to cut the Giants' deficit to 3-2.

St. Scholastica pushed their lead to 6-2 with three runs in the visitors' third before Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) scored on a Bzozowski double to trim the Saints' lead to three runs.  St. Scholastica added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to hold a five-run cushion before Keystone closed out the scoring on a base hit by Guerrero that plated Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) in the sixth inning to close out hte scoring.

Andy Davis was credited with the win after allowing four runs on nine hits to go along with seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work on the mound for St. Scholastica.  Zack Farmer closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning for the Saints, who pounded out 13 hits in the contest, with four players recording multi-hit games.

Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits while striking out eight batters in 4.0 innings on the hill for Keystone.  Jack Simons (Great Falls, VA/Bullis School) struck out four batters while scattering three hits over the final three innings.

Guerrero led all players with three hits and two RBIs while Gurman and Bzozowski each had two hits apiece in the loss for the Giants.

In the nightcap, Keystone built a 5-0 lead with a five-run second inning, but the Saints would score six unanswered runs to claim the win.  Cody Darley (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) drew a bases loaded walk in the second that allowed Bzozowski to trot home with the game's first run before Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) cleared the bases with a three-run triple to make it a four run game.  Reyes then scored the Giants' fifth run on an RBI groundout by Joe Angelucci (Commack, NY/Commack)

St. Scholastica used a sacrifice fly followed by a two-run single to narrow their deficit to 5-3 in the home half of the inning before using a run apiece in both the fourth and fifth innings to force extras.  In the bottom of the ninth inning, with the bases loaded and nobody, the Saints got a walk-off single from Tyler Duex to complete the comeback win.
 
Thomas Rogers was credited with the win after allowing one hit over the final 3.1 innings on the mound for St. Scholastica.

Keystone starter Dan Maguire (Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Township) went 2.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits.  James Dunning (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) tossed 4.0 innings, yielding two runs on two hits while striking out a pair before turning the ball over to Jake Granteed (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) who suffered the loss after allowing the final run while surrendering four hits while fanning three batters in 2.0 innings on the hill.
 
Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) had two hits to lead the Giants while Reyes drove in three runs in the loss. 
 
Keystone and St. Scholastica will meet for a third time on Monday at 12:00 p.m. in Fort Pierce.
