#8 Webster Downs #10 Cortland St, 10-5

The #8 nationally ranked Webster University baseball team defeated #10 ranked Cortland State Univesrsity, 10-5, on March in Auburndale, FL.  Brett Buchanan (SR, Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) came on in relief to pick up the win.  The Gorlok attack banged out 14 hits against seven Red Dragon pitchers in the win.

Buchanan came on with two outs in the fifth in relief of starter Isaac Behme (JR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS), to snuff out a Cortland rally and pitched 3 1/3 innings, scattering four hits and allowing one unearned run for his first win in 2014.

Jarrod Turner (SR, Springfield, IL/Chatham Glenwood HS) was 3-4 with 3 RBIs and two runs scored.  Ryan Hall (SR, Chesterfield, MO/ Eureka HS) was 3-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, and Taylor Stoulp (SR, St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's HS) was 2-5 with an RBI and run scored.

The Gorloks would break the game open in the 7th and 8th innings.  In the7th, with two out, Stoulp and Jeff Kammer (JR, Chesterfield, MO/Jefferson College) singled, and after a Cortland  pitching change, Joe Winckel (SR, Bonne Terre, MO/North County HS) walked to load the bases.  A Turner single scored Stoulp and Kammer to make it 7-5 Webster.

In the 8th, freshman Matt Wollnik (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) singled and Corey Lasky (Vernon Hills, IL/Adlai E Stevenson HS) was hit by a pitch.  After a wild pitch moved both up, Hall doubled Wollnik and Lasky in.  Stoulp followed with a single to score Hall and Webster led, 10-5.

Webster had taken a 2-0 lead in the 2nd on a Winckel single, a double by Turner, and two-run single by Kevin Kojs (SR, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central HS).  Cortland scored two in the 3rd to tie it up, and two more in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead before Buchanan snuffed out the rally.

The Gorloks regained the lead in the 6th as Kammer walked, Winckel doubled and Turner singled Kammer in.  Winckel took third on the hit and after a Cortland pitching change, scored on a wild pitch.  Two more wild pitches later, Turner would score also, making it 5-4, Webster.

Closer Jason Gray (SR, St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) came on in the ninth to pitch a scoreless ninth, despite giving up a couple hits.  Gray coaxed a 4-6-3 double play after a leadoff single.

Behme went 4 2/3 innings in his first start of 2014, allowing four earned runs on six hits and a walk.  Behme, who was 10-3 in 2013, with a 2.68 ERA, struck out  one while earning no decision.

Webster is 2-0 on the season, and will face #19 ranked Wheaton College (MA) on March 10 in Winter Haven, FL.
