FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Just when Immaculata thought it might be on the verge of a late comeback and two-game sweep of the Elizabethtown College baseball team Thursday, the Blue Jays slammed the door. Five players plated a run in a six-run sixth inning that elevated E-town to a 13-5 win. Immaculata won game one, 4-1.
Freshman Josh Kwak held the Mighty Macs (2-5) scoreless in four of the first five innings while his team built a seemingly comfortable 7-2 lead. The Blue Jays (5-3) scored runs in each of the first four innings, highlighted by a three-run third in which Alex Holbert doubled in Ryan Shirk.
Riding the momentum that came with his first career home run in game one, Colton King produced runs in back-to-back innings with a ground out in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Kwak had the Mighty Macs' number for much of their first three trips through the lineup. Before things started to get hairy in the sixth, Kwak struck out Patrick Boulware and Mike Lascomb on consecutive at-bats, part of a seven-strikeout afternoon.
The Ringwood, N.J., native couldn't escape trouble though, as a lead-off walk to Jason McCormick and a double off the bat of Joe DiGiaimo would come back hurt him. Eli Vottero poked a single between first and second bringing in both IU runners and trimming the E-town lead to 7-4.
Howie Halamets doubled in Vottero a few pitches later to bring Immaculata even closer.
With the go-ahead run at the plate, Sean Jones got pinch hitter Matt Lawson to fly out to Dylan Manning in right to end the inning.
The Blue Jays still had plenty of offense left in them, scoring six times to answer the Mighty Macs' three runs. Frank Ragozzino, 3-for-4 in game two, singled in Richy Masciarelli to open the wave of runs. Holbert drew a bases-loaded walk, Kyle Fackler singled, Ragozzino scored on an error, Tyler Weary hit a sac fly and Jones singled as E-town scored runs in five straight at-bats.
Jones went back out to the mound for the seventh, retiring the side in order for his second save.
Holbert went 1-for-2 with two runs, three RBIs, a double, a pair of walks and two steals. Jones, King and Ragozzino all drove in two. Shirk scored a team-high three runs.
Immaculata opened a 4-0 lead after four in game one against Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Week Taras Letnaunchyn to gain the split.
The Blue Jays never got a read on Bryan McHale, who whiffed seven and allowed one hit in four innings.
Nick Comito's single up the middle gave the Mighty Macs a 1-0 advantage in the second. They'd expand it to 3-0 in the third with an RBI double by Peter Boulware and a successful double steal from Boulware and Lascomb.
A solo shot from Kalamets made it 4-0 in the fourth, before King tagged a pitch from John Pedorenko in the Jays' next at-bats.
Letnaunchyn struck out six, walked two and was hit nine times in going the distance. Nick Campione recorded all three outs in the seventh on strikes to notch his first save of the year.
Elizabethtown was limited to five hits in the opener with two coming from Holbert.
The Blue Jays will conclude their nine-game trip to Florida with a re-match against 25th-ranked Misericordia Friday at 10 a.m. E-town picked up a 9-8 win over the Cougars last Sunday.
