Box Score The Webster University baseball team suffered its first loss of 2014, losing to #17 Wheaton College (MA), 5-2, on March 10 in Winter Haven, FL. The Gorloks only managed six hits on the afternoon, but could take solace in the debut pitching performance of starter Chris Jansen.
Jansen, a junior transfer from Cicero, IN (St. Joseph's College), went seven innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, walking none and striking out three.
The Gorloks took a 1-0 lead in the second. Joe Winckel (SR, Bonne Terre, MO/North County HS) singled and a Jarrod Turner (SR, Springfield, IL/Chatham Glenwood HS) single put runners at first and third. After a Turner steal of second, Kevin Kojs (SR, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central HS) scored Winckel with a sac fly.
Wheaton tied the game and took the lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, three singles plated one run, and a one out single, passed ball, and another single made it 2-1 Wheaton in the sixth.
The Gorloks tied it up in the seventh. After a Kojs leadoff double, pinch-runner Charlie Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) moved to third on a ground out and took home on a Matt Wollnik (FR, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) sac fly.
With Jansen having tossed 92 pitches, Jack Bensinger (JR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall) took over in the eighth. One batter later, Freshman Matt Goro (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS) was summoned to replace Bensinger after a leadoff walk. A sacrifice bunt and walk left runners at first and second for Wheaton, and closer Jason Gray (SR, St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) got the call. Gray gave up a triple, scoring two Lyons and giving Wheaton a 4-2 lead.
After Webster went down 1-2-3 in the eighth, Mitch Stefani (SO, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) made his 2014 pitching debut for the Gorloks. Stefani was touched for the Lyons final run, and the final was 5-2. Bensinger took the loss.
Kevin Kojs was 1-1 with a 2B, sac fly RBI, and a walk. Wollnik was 1-2 with an RBI and Turner wound up 2-4 on the afternoon.
The Gorloks will play Wartburg College (IA) on March 11 in Lakeland, FL. After a day off, Webster faces #12 ranked Marietta College (OH) on March 13.
