The Oglethorpe baseball team did not make it easy on themselves Thursday night, but they got a nice mix of clutch hitting and clutch relief pitching in the end and secured a 6-5 SAA victory over Sewanee at Anderson Field.
The Petrels had fielding difficulties in the early-going, committing five errors in the game's first six innings which led to two unearned runs. The visiting Tigers took an early 3-0 lead, but the Petrels were able to get two runs back in the third when third baseman Austin Ferlita hit a sacrifice fly that probably would have been a grand slam on a night where the wind was not blowing in and Trice scored on a delayed double steal. The Petrels then tied the game in the fifth on an RBI double from second baseman Keith Dearden.
However, they gave two runs right back in the sixth inning and again fell behind, this time 5-3. The Petrels rallied again, though, and scored three unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning. First baseman Frank Sarno reached first on a Sewanee error to lead off the inning, but was still standing there with two outs. However, a walk from left fielder Andre Turnquest extended the inning for center fielder Vernon Trice, who came through with a two-run double over the left fielder's head to tie the game. Then, designated hitter Patrick Kulick followed with an RBI double of his own into the gap in left-center to give the Petrels a 6-5 lead.
In the seventh, the Tigers put runners at the corners with nobody out, but Oglethorpe reliever David Langhan struck out the next three batters in a row to retire the side and get out of the jam unscathed. Langhan wound up with the win for his efforts, improving his record to 1-1 on the season. He allowed no runs, two hits and a walk over two innings of work, striking out four.
In the eighth, Sewanee again put their first two hitters of the inning on, but Kulick, who entered the field as the Oglethorpe pitcher to start the inning, induced a double-play grounder for the first two outs. He followed by striking out the next Sewanee hitter to get the Petrels out of that jam unscathed, as well. Kulick came back out and zipped through the Tigers in order in the ninth, striking out the first two hitters and inducing a ground ball to end the game and lock down his third save of the season. He allowed two walks and struck out three over two innings of work while not allowing a hit or a run.
Kulick was the Petrels' most successful hitter at the plate, as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Trice went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases while Dearden finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The win improves the Petrels to 7-8 on the season, 2-5 in SAA play. They'll complete their three-game home series with Sewanee on Friday. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Anderson Field beginning at 3 p.m.
