SANFORD, FL- For the second straight day at the UAA Baseball Championships, the University of Rochester held off a 9th inning rally from its opponent for a 7-6 victory over Brandeis University on Friday afternoon.
UR reliever Evan Janifer recorded a strikeout and then induced a ground out with the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the 9th inning to lead Rochester to its second straight win.
The Yellowjackets recorded a season high 15 in the win with five players recording multi-hit performances. Seniors Ethan Sander and Nate Mulberg along with freshman Sam Steele all had three hits while Brendan Garry and Brian Munoz each earned two hits. Sander recorded 2 RBI along with Garry and Steele scored three times for Rochester (2-5, 2-5 UAA).
UR starter Michael Mondon had a solid day on the mound in picking up his first collegiate win (1-0). The sophomore went 7 innings, allowed 7 hits, 3 runs (1 earned) and 2 walks while striking out 6. Classmate Grant Petito threw 1 1/3 innings of relief before Janifer was called to shut the door in the 9th for his first save.
Brandeis (6-7, 2-5 UAA) was able to get on the board first with a well-executed hit and run play in the bottom of the 1st inning.
In the 3rd, Rochester responded when Sander cracked a base hit up the middle scoring Munoz and Steele who reached via singles to lead off the frame.
The bottom of the 4th saw another well timed hit and run score the tying run for the Judges. But the 'Jackets would answer back with a big fifth inning, plating four runs to grab a 6-2 lead. Junior Sam Slutsky provided and RBI hit and sophomore Nolan Schultz also drove in a run before Garry stepped up and singled down the left field line to score two more.
The Judges were able to scrape across an unearned run in the seventh before Mulberg countered with an RBI single through the drawn in infield making the score 7-3 after eight innings.
In the 9th, Brandeis capitalized on two Rochester errors to plate three, but Janifer stayed cool with the tying and winning runs on base, closing the door on the 7-6 win.
UR finishes the UAA championship on Saturday against Washington-St. Louis in a game slated to start at 11 am.
