The LeTourneau University baseball team had its eight-game winning streak against ASC foes snapped in a 5-1 loss to host Mississippi College on Friday evening.

The YellowJackets (16-3, 11-2 ASC) fell behind 5-0 before scoring a run in the ninth off Choctaws starter, Brooks Fortenberry. Bryce Griffin and Garrett Methvin had four of the five hits for LeTourneau. Senior Curt Copeland, who pitched 5.2 innings, allowed eight hits, five runs – four earned and struck out three in the loss to fall to 2-2. In relief, Josh Gimre pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up just a hit.

The Choctaws (6-11, 5-8 ASC) spread nine hits among six players and picked up a strong performance from Fortenberry. The left hander nearly went the distance going 8.2 innings, allowing an unearned run and striking out nine to improve to 2-1.

Mississippi College took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by Evans and stretched the advantage to 5-0 in the fourth and sixth with a pair of runs in each inning. With the five-run cushion, the YellowJackets were kept off the base paths. They had just one runner in scoring position in the third and did not have another runner in scoring position until the ninth.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Methvin started out a two-out rally with a single. Next, David Perkins reached on an error by MC to put runners on first and second. Methvin and Perkins each moved to second and third; then, Kyle Jacobs walked to load the bases for Dillon Yates. The sophomore catcher picked up a bases loaded RBI walk to end the day for Fortenberry. The Choctaws ended the threat with a ground out to end the game.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a twinbill on Saturday at noon.
