Fielding Errors Cost Oxy Sweep of Rutgers-Newark

LOS ANGELES — Riley Smith went 4 for 5 with an RBI-single and a stolen base and C.J. Maruyamapitched four scoreless innings as Oxy's starter.

But the Occidental baseball team came up short in its attempt to complete the weekend sweep of Rutgers-Newark on Sunday, falling 6-3 at Anderson Field.

Oxy drops to 11-12 overall. Rutgers-Newark improves to 4-11.

The Tigers beat the Scarlett Raiders by a combined score of 17-5 in the first two games of the non-conference matchup on Saturday.

Oxy had a 3-0 lead for most of the game on Sunday. Smith drove in Walker Marks with a single through the left side in the first and a Chris Strain bunt and Scott Ericksen single brought in two more runs in the third.

Then the Tigers committed three of their four errors, allowing Rutgers-Newark to take the lead with four unearned runs in the top of the sixth.

The Scarlett Raiders added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth.

Victor Munoz nearly tied the game up in the bottom of the ninth with what would have been a three-run homer had it stayed fair inside the right-field foul pole.

Chris Strain finished 2 for 4 for Oxy.

The Tigers begin an important three-game series at conference leader Whittier on Friday. Oxy sits in fourth at 7-5, three games back of the Poets.
