The power surge continued on Monday for the Buena Vista baseball team, as it scored the final five runs of the game via three home runs, and went on to post an 11-8 come-from-behind victory over Gustavus Adolphus.
BVU trailed 8-3 in the fourth, but Scott Harris, who came on in relief, kept the Gusties in control over the final six innings to help the Beavers capture their seventh straight win.
Sophomore Brandon Wessels, who finished just a double shy of hitting for the cycle, belted the team's first home run of the season in the sixth - a three-run blast - to put BVU ontop for the first time in the contest at 9-8. Two batters later, Tanner Truesdell connected on his first career roundtripper, and the Beavers led 10-8 after seven.
Ryan Duncan got in on the hit parade as well and launched his first career home run over the left field fence to plate another key insurance run in the eighth.
Harris, meanwhile, retired Gustavus in order in each of the final three innings, after enducing a big double play in the sixth. He finished the game with a career-high nine strikeouts and didn't walk a batter, while scattering just four hits.
Adam Bernstorf got the no-decision after going just three innings, allowing six runs (four earned) and four hits. He also walked three and struck out three.
Wessels went 4-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored to help lead the way at the plate. Truesdell followed with three hits and also drove in four, as Duncan scored a career-best three runs.
Buena Vista tallied 13 more hits in the contest and chalked up 34 against the Gusties in the two games against them.
Each team scored a run in the first before Gustavus extend the lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in both the second and third. BVU cut the deficit back to 5-3 with RBI's from Truesdell and Jeremy Lambert before the Gusties went up 8-3 with three more runs in the fourth.
BVU, however, answered right back with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the fourth, including a big two-out, two-run single from Truesdell. From there, it was all BVU, as the Beavers have now scored 46 times over their last three games.
The 9-1 start to the year is the best stretch to begin a season for BVU since it went 11-1 out of the gate in 2009. The seven straight wins is the longest streak for the team since it also ran off seven in a row to end the 2011 regular season.
The Beavers are back out on the diamond on Tuesday when they take on Hamline University (6-3) at 10:00am CT.
