Warhawks Split with St. Olaf

UW-Whitewater used a three-run second inning to take control of game one and went on to defeat St. Olaf 7-1 in Auburndale, Florida Wednesday.  In game two the Warhawk bats fell silent as St. Olaf went on to win 2-0.  These were the final two games of their spring trip and the Warhawks will return to Wisconsin with an 8-2 record.  St. Olaf is 7-7 this season.

Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) scored the first run in game one in the top of the second on a ground out.  UW-W added another when Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) reached on a walk and scored on a Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine) triple to right field.  In the next at bat Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) grounded out and pushed Cannon home to give UW-W a 3-0 lead after one and a half.

UW-W tallied two more in the top of the fifth.  Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) singled to lead off the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood).  Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) followed with a double to left, but Kuhlmann was held up at third.  Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) followed with a sacrifice fly to right and Kuhlmann scored.  Fon later scored on an error by St. Olaf and UW-W held a 5-0 lead after four and a half.

In the sixth UW-W made it 7-0 when a Mierow double scored Cannon and another Kuhlmann single scored Mierow.

St. Olaf picked up their only run in the bottom of the seventh, in a scheduled seven inning game.

Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake) pitched a gem for the Warhawks allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out five.  Morgan is now 2-0 this season.

Game two featured just eight hits by both teams, four apiece.  St. Olaf notched a run in the top of the first and that was all Jake Mathison needed.  He threw all seven innings giving up just four hits.  The offense did add another run in the third to make it 2-0.

Mathison's counterpart, Austin Jones (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West), pitched a solid game as well; he just didn't get the run support.  Jones went the distance giving up just four hits while striking out two.

For the day Pierce led the way going 4-for-7 with one run and seven total bases.  Cannon and Fon collected three hits each while four other Warhawks accounted for at least one hit.  Mierow was the only player to notch multiple RBIs with two.

The Warhawks will likely play host to Ripon College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.  The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Ripon but due to field conditions the game will probably be moved to Whitewater.  Check uwwsports.com in the upcoming days for more information.
