(LEXINGTON, Ky.) - The Thomas More College baseball team defeated in-state rival Transylvania University, 5-2, today (Thursday, March 27, 2014) in a non-conference game at Marquard Field in Lexington, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 6-7 on the season and with the loss, the Pioneers fall to 7-10.
Transylvania took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs and the Saints answered with two runs inthe top of the third to tie the game at 2-2. In the top of the sixth, freshman outfielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had an run batted-in single scoring freshman infielder Tommy Arnzen (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) and junior catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) to take a 4-2 lead. Senior outfielder Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had a RBI scoring senior infielder Tyler Graber (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) to increase the lead to 5-2. The Saints held the Pioneers scoreless over the final four innings for the 5-2 victory.
Handley led the Saints at the plate as he was two-for-five with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Five other Saints had multiple hits in the game as Metzger was two-for-three with two RBI, Popham was two-for-three with a run scored, sophomore designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) was two-for-five with a double and a RBI, senior outfielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-five and junior infielder Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-five with a run scored.
Freshman pitcher Addison Brown (Erlanger, Ky./Lloyd Memorial) earned his first collegiate win as he pitched six innings giving up two runs (both earned) on four hits, while striking one and walking one. Sophomore pitcher Chris Auer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched the seventh inning and struck one one, while not allowing a hit and freshman Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) pitched a hitless eighth inning and struck out one. Senior pitcher Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) earned the save as he pitched the ninth inning and gave up three hits and struck out one.
Thomas More will travel to Greenville, Pennsylvania on Saturday and Sunday (March 29 and 30) to play Thiel College in a three-game Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) series at Tomcat Park. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single-game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
