Providence, R.I. – Sophomore Ty Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I.) laid down a perfect bunt to score fellow sophomore Brad McParlin (Pawtucket, R.I.) with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th to lead the Johnson & Wales University baseball team to a thrilling 1-0 victory against Norwich in the first game of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.  The second game of the double header was postponed due to rain and will be made up at a later date.

After battling through 10 scoreless innings, McParlin led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a walk and moved to second on a wild pick.  He later went to third on a fielder's choice and scored the game's only run on the RBI bunt single by Karalis, propelling JWU to the 1-0 victory.

Johnson & Wales junior Shawn Haugh (Tampa, Fla.) and Norwich junior Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) engaged in a pitcher's duel with Haugh throwing nine scoreless innings, scattering five hits with two strikeouts while Place allowed just five hits with two strikeouts in eight innings or work.  Senior Tim Ashworth (West Chesterfield, N.H.) picked up the win for JWU with two innings of perfect relief, striking out three along the way.

Senior Jack Hocking (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Lou Umberto (Cranston, R.I.) each tallied a pair of hits in the victory for the Wildcats while sophomore Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) went 2-for-3 in the setback for Norwich.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 14-3 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC while Norwich falls to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action, weather permitting, on Sunday, March 30th when they host St. Joseph's of Maine in a GNAC double header starting at 3:30 p.m.
