MARIETTA, Ohio – The No. 18-ranked Marietta College Pioneers split a non-conference doubleheader with Mount Aloysius College Wednesday (April 2) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers posted a 4-0 win in the first game and dropped game two by the score of 5-4. Marietta is 13-7 overall, while the Mounties are 7-11 on the season.

Three Pioneers combined on the game one shutout. Sophomore Christian Herstine (4-1) started on the mound and worked 3.0 innings. He allowed three hits and struck out six. Freshman Jim Luyster threw 3.0 innings of one-hit ball, while junior Mike Fulton tossed a perfect seventh inning.

Marietta left fielder Josh Ungerbuehler got the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the second inning. Ungerbuehler led off with a single through the left side of the infield and then moved to second on a wild pitch. A balk sent him to third where he scored on a ground out by designated hitter Chris Winpigler.

Sophomore right fielder Tim McCoy made it 2-0 with a towering home run over the right field wall to start the Pioneers' third inning. It was McCoy's first round-tripper of the season.

Tyghe Bowers (0-3) started and took the loss for the Mounties. Bowers pitched 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He walked two Pioneer batters. Rodney Patterson allowed two runs on two hits in 3.0 innings of relief.

Marietta added a couple of insurance runs in the fifth. Ungerbuehler was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Winpigler followed with a double to the wall in left center scoring Ungerbuehler. A sac bunt from Jevin Johnston moved Winpigler to third where he scored on a sac fly from Ryan Hanahan.

Winpigler finished 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Ungerbuehler went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. McCoy's only hit in the game was the solo home run.

The Pioneers drew first blood in game two. Shortstop Christian Demko led off the bottom of the first with a single to center. Demko stole second and moved to third when the throw sailed into center field. Following a walk, first baseman Mitch Geers flew out to deep center scoring Demko with a sac fly.

With a conference doubleheader a few days away, Marietta head coach Brian Brewer split the pitching responsibilities in both games. Sophomore Jason Byers started and worked 3.0 shutout innings. Freshman Tyler Nieberding took over in the fourth inning and quickly ran into trouble.

The first two Mountie batters singled and then Cory Dick layed down a sac bunt. Nieberding fielded the ball and tried to get the lead runner at third base but the throw was late and Mt. Aloysius had the bases loaded with no outs.

Nieberding induced a shallow fly ball to left for the first out of the inning and the Pioneers were a ground ball away from getting out of the inning. Brewer went to the bullpen and brought in freshman Zak Janus. Janus got the ground ball but Marietta couldn't complete the twin killing and allowed a run to score.

Dylan Oswalt singled up the middle scoring another run to put the Mounties in front, 2-1. A Pioneer error loaded the bases for leadoff hitter Ian Helsel. Janus' first pitch to Helsel grazed him forcing in another run with the hit batsman.

Hanahan cut the Mountie lead in half in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out solo home run over the left field wall. Hanahan's first home run of the season made it 3-2 in favor of Mt. Aloysius.

Mt. Aloysius scored once in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Marietta answered with two in the bottom half to tie the game, 4-4. Demko smacked an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch.

The score remained tied until the seventh inning. The Mounties got a one-out sibgle from Benjamin Legath. A sac bunt moved Legath into scoring position with two outs. Jesse Bortner hit a slow chopper between the mound and first base that the Pioneers misplayed allowing Legath to come around and score the winning run.

Freshman Kordell Antill (0-1) got the loss. Antill pitched 2.1 innings of relief and gave up one unearned run on two hits. He struck out one.

Brady Wright (1-0) got the win in relief. Wright worked 1.2 innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts. Daniel Resavy threw the seventh inning to get his first save of the season.

Demko finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Hanahan was 1-for-3 with the solo home run.

Marietta hosts Muskingum University Saturday (April 5) for a 1:00 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.
