Providence, R.I.-Senior first baseman Justin Rainville (Cumberland, RI) went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored, while junior second baseman Dean Beshansky (Cumberland, RI) went 3-for-3 at the dish, to lead the Rhode Island College baseball team to a 15-5 victory over Becker College in non-conference action played at Anchorman Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Rhode Island College ups its record to 6-10 for the year after tying its season-high scoring total with 15 runs on 16 hits. Becker falls to 7-8 on the season with the loss.
The Anchormen opened up the scoring onslaught in the bottom of the first inning after sophomore right fielder Matt Foley's (Seekonk, MA) RBI single to center field plated Beshansky. Junior left fielder Tyler Santaniello (Cumberland, RI) came around to score later in the frame on an RBI ground out to make it, 2-0.
After the Hawks got on the scoreboard in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single from senior left fielder D.J. Reed (Londonderry, NH), Rhode Island College responded with a five-run third inning to pull away from the visitors early in the action. Santaniello and Foley each ripped RBI singles to key the scoring explosion, while Rainville added an RBI double to left-center field later on to highlight the inning.
Becker managed to scratch a run in the top of the fourth inning to make it, 7-2, after senior right fielder Tom Natoli (Suffern, NY) scored on a wild pitch. However, RIC once again answered back, this time with two more runs, to extend its lead to seven at the end of the fourth.
After taking a 9-2 lead over the Hawks, the bats continued to stay hot for the Anchormen, as the hosts tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth and took a commanding, 13-2, lead. Rainville's solo home run over the left field fence to lead off the inning spearheaded the attack, while sophomore designated hitter Angelo St. Laurent's (Cranston, RI) RBI double to right-center field later in the frame capped off the scoring.
Following a quiet sixth inning, the Anchormen added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it, 15-2. The Hawks rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth, and one more run in the top of the ninth, to account for the final total. Senior designated hitter Evan Reilly's (Hanover, MA) RBI single to right field gave Becker life late in the game, but the double-digit margin proved to be too much for the visitors to overcome.
Junior right-hander Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) struck out four batters and earned the win (1-1) for Rhode Island College after scattering two runs on three hits and two walks in five innings of work.
Senior right-hander Trenton Gibson (Henderson, NV) suffered the loss (0-4) for Becker.
Beshansky added a walk, an RBI and two runs scored to go along with his 3-for-3 day at the dish, while Santaniello went 2-for-2 with a triple, two walks, an RBI and three runs scored on the afternoon. Foley finished with a 2-for-2 day at the plate that included two RBI and a run scored, while sophomore shortstop Gian Abbruzzesse (North Providence, RI) went 1-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
Reed went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Hawks offensively.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Brandeis tomorrow afternoon (3:30 p.m.).
