Tommies rally for win; game 2 suspended

After five-plus hours of baseball on Wednesday, St. Thomas baseball left its home diamond with a win -- and a lead.

UST rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to win 15-5 in game one against visiting Macalester.

Game two -- the debut of the extended nine-inning game to close MIAC doubleheaders -- was suspended by darkness in the home half of the seventh inning with the Toms ahead 4-1. UST has runners on first and second bases with two out.

Macalester took a 4-0 lead and knocked out UST starter Steve Maher in the second inning. But UST relievers Bill Ferderer and Tommy Danczyk combined for six innings of no-hit baseball, allowing only a second-inning wild-pitch that scored the fifth run.

UST took advantage of seven errors as it erased the lead and pulled away to win a game that lasted 2:50 on the clock. Danczyk came on with runners on first and second in the fifth inning with the score tied 5-5 and retired all eight batters he faced, three by strikeout.

Tommie game-two starter Eric Veglahn had 10 strikeouts and allowed two walks and one run through seven innings. Mac's Quentin Stuart has a homer among his three hits in game two.

Tyler Peterson homered in game two and had two hits in game one. Brady Johnson and Ben Podobinski also had two hits in the opener.

UST (10-5 overall, 1-0 MIAC) is supposed to play a home twinbill Saturday against Hamline if the weather cooperates, but heavy wet snow is in the Twin Cities forecast over the next 36 hours.
