NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A four-run inning in the top of the seventh in the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team's second game of the day against SUNY Oswego Saturday at Loren Campbell Memorial Field salvaged a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader split, as the Hawks won the nightcap, 5-4, after falling, 4-0, in game one.

New Paltz moves to 10-14 overall and 2-6 in SUNYAC play, while Oswego pushes its overall record to 10-5 and its SUNYAC mark to 2-3. The two teams will finish out their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.

Game 1: Oswego 4, New Paltz 0

New Paltz scattered nine hits in the nine-inning game one, but Oswego was able to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard to preserve the shutout win.

The Lakers scored first in the bottom of the second with an RBI groundout by freshman designated hitter Eric Hamilton. Junior right fielder John Rauseo made it a 2-0 game in the third with an RBI single through the left side, while senior third baseman Tim Smith pushed an RBI double down the left-field line in the fourth to give the Lakers a 3-0 advantage. Oswego added insurance in the eighth, as Rauseo stole home on a double-steal attempt.

Junior pitcher Brian Solomon (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) worked five innings on the hill for the Hawks and shouldered the loss, giving up three runs off seven hits and a walk while striking out two. Sophomore pitcher Christian Huertas (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) threw well out of the bullpen, yielding one unearned run off no hits and three walks while striking out two. Oswego's junior pitcher Brendyn Karinchak picked up the complete-game shutout, allowing nine hits and one walk while striking out five.

Sophomore catcher Tyler Bell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore third baseman/shortstop Andrew DiNardo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) each went 2-for-4 to lead New Paltz, while Oswego gained multi-hit performances from senior center fielder Scott Buniak, Smith and junior catcher Kyle Liner.

Game 2: New Paltz 5, Oswego 4

New Paltz came from behind in the seven-inning game two, scoring four times in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead and hanging on in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.

The seventh inning began with a single by junior designated hitter Stanley DeLaCruz (Bronx, N.Y./High School of International Business and Finance) to right center, and senior first baseman David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) singled through the right side to put runners on first and second with no outs. SophomoreTom Dieckhoff (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) then pinch ran for Lostaglio, and during the next at-bat, senior second baseman Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) drove in DeLaCruz with a single through the left side. Junior right fielder J.T. Kirk (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) absorbed a hit by pitch to load the bases, prompting an Oswego pitching change and a New Paltz substitution for Kirk on the base paths in favor of freshman Brett Wisner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills).

Oswego's reliever struggled with command early, as Dieckhoff scored on a wild pitch to pull the Hawks within one. Junior center fielder/right fielder Richard Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) drew a walk during the next at-bat, and a wild ball four allowed Morse to come around, knotting the score at 4-all. Bell pushed across the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Wisner.

The Lakers kicked off scoring in the first, scoring a run off an RBI double by senior shortstop Mike McMullen before adding one more off a defensive miscue. The Hawks got one back in the third, as Bell drove in Morse with a single to left center. A two-run fourth by Oswego gave the Lakers a three-run cushion, as freshman designated hitter Myles Kutscher and freshman catcher Eric Hamilton each posted an RBI.

Senior pitcher Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) earned the complete-game win, yielding four runs (two earned) off seven hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Sophomore pitcher Miles Kelly did not earn a decision for Oswego, going six innings while giving up five runs off eight hits and two walks while striking out three. Junior pitcher Pat Brown was handed the loss, issuing a walk and throwing two wild pitches.

DeLaCruz went 2-for-2 with a run scored and a double, while Morse batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Oswego's attack was led by junior left fielder Dan Saccocio (2-for-3) and McMullen (2-for-4).
