#18 Marietta splits third straight doubleheader

MARIETTA, Ohio – Junior third baseman Ryan Hanahan went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and five runs batted in to help Marietta College salvage a split with Muskingum University Saturday (April 5) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium. Muskingum won the first game 3-2 before the Etta Express rebounded with a 13-3 win in game two.

The Pioneer, ranked 18th nationally, are 14-8 on the season and 4-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Muskingum is 7-12 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.

Sophomore Austin Miller (3-2) tossed a complete-game for the Muskies to pick up the win in game one. Miller kept the Pioneer hitters off balance scattering six base hits, all singles, over 9.0 innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out four.

Marietta scored a run in the second and fourth innings, while the Muskies tallied one in the second and sixth innings. With the scored tied at two, Muskingum plated a run in the eighth to take the lead.

Freshman Jim Luyster took over on the mound for the Pioneer to start the eighth inning. After retiring the first batter, Luyster beaned the next hitter and then issued a walk. Following a fly out, Brandon Marczika delivered a two-out single to center scoring the winning run.

Sophomore Jason Byers started on the mound for Marietta and worked 7.0 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and 10 strikeouts. Luyster (0-2) took the loss after giving up one run in 2.0 innings. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one.

After struggling at the plate in the first game, Marietta's offense got off to a slow start in the nitecap as well. Muskingum starter, Alex VanDine, shutout the Pioneers through the first four innings as Muskingum clung to a 1-0 lead.

Christian Demko and Tyler Packanik delivered RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to get the Etta Express rolling. Hanahan crushed a triple to straight away center field in the sixth scoring two more.

The floodgates opened for Marietta in the seventh when the Pioneers sent 10 hitters to the plate resulting in five runs. Zach Bukiewicz, Mitch Geers, Josh Ungerbuehler, Clint Roche and Hanahan each drove in a run.

Marietta plated four more in the eighth inning as Roche lined a two-run single to center and Hanahan knocked in two more with a double don the right field line.

Junior Mike Fulton (1-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Mike Finlan. Fulton pitched 3.1 shutout innings allowing five base hits. Finlan gave up three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.

VanDine (2-3) went 6.0 innings and was charged with four runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out six. Three other Muskie pitchers worked the final 2.0 innings.

The Pioneers banged out 15 hits in the game led by Hanahan's three extra base hits. Bukiewicz, Ungerbuehler and Roche each finished with two hits, while Roche collected three RBI.

Marietta travels to Cleveland on Sunday (April 6) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at No. 21 Case Western Reserve University. The Pioneers defeated Case Western 3-2 back on March 1st in Beckley, W.Va.
