Fon Grand Slam Fuels Win over Saints

Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) belted a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth as the Warhawks surged to an 11-8 win over St. Scholastica Saturday at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater.    Fon went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored as UW-W improved to 12-3 this season.  The Saints fall to 10-8.

The Warhawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two.  Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) doubled in the first run of the game in the bottom of the first while Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) singled in two more later in the inning.  Fon notched his first RBI of the day in the bottom of the second on a single through the right side that plated Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood).

The six-run fourth started with a Power double to right center and the next two batters flew out.  Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) followed with a walk and Haen was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Fon followed with a bomb to right field to make it 8-0.  Two batters later Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) doubled in Friend, and later in the inning, with the bases loaded again, the Warhawks scored their tenth run of the game on a balk.

UW-W tallied one more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-0 and all the while Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic) was pitching a gem for the Warhawks.  Liston went six innings and gave up just five hits while notching eight strikeouts.  He is second on the team with 22 strikeouts this season and currently carries a 1.69 ERA in 21.1 innings pitched.

The bullpen took over for the final three innings and gave up four runs in the 7th and four more in the ninth to make the score a respectable 11-8.

Haen, Friend, and Power each recorded two hits for the Warhawks who totaled 12 in the game.  The Warhawks used patience to total eight walks while the pitching gave up just two.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a single game in Whitewater beginning at 1:00 pm.
