The Oglethorpe baseball team was swept in a three-game series this weekend after dropping the series finale to 15th-ranked Birmingham-Southern, 10-1, Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Stormy Petrels fell behind 5-0 in the first two innings and 9-0 before scoring their first run in the bottom of the fourth. That run came after third baseman Austin Ferlita tripled to the left-center gap to lead off the inning. First baseman Frank Sarno then drove him in with an RBI groundout to shortstop, making the score 9-1.

However, the visiting Panthers added a run back on in the sixth and cruised from there, winning by nine runs to complete the three-game sweep.

The Petrels accumulated six total hits on the day. Second baseman Keith Dearden went 2-for-3 for the game, Sarno went 2-for-4 with an RBI and shortstop T.J. Schmutz went 1-for-2.

Starter Justin Dempsey suffered the loss on the day, dropping to 0-2 on the season. He allowed four earned runs on four hits over two innings of work, walking one and striking out three while giving up a home run.

With the loss, the Petrels drop to 10-17 on the season, 4-10 in SAA play. That puts them in seventh place in the league currently, going into their final two conference series of the year, one on the road against fourth-place Hendrix and the other at home against fifth-place Millsaps. First, the Petrels will host Rust in a four-game non-conference series at Anderson Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday at 5 p.m. before coming back on Wednesday for another doubleheader at 3 p.m.
