William Paterson Baseball Splits with Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. – William Paterson (7-11, 2-3 NJAC) received a pair of complete-game pitching performances as the Pioneers split a baseball doubleheader at Richard Stockton (13-9, 3-3 NJAC), 2-3 and 3-2, April 6.

Game One

Senior Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) tossed a complete-game nine-hitter, but three unearned runs spoiled the effort during a 3-2 loss.

A leadoff base hit, two strikeouts and an error led to an RBI-single by senior second baseman Luke Root, handing Stockton a 1-0 lead after two innings. The Ospreys added two more in the third, aided by an error, walk and two-run single.

Freshman center fielder Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) started the seventh inning with a base hit through the left side, and after two WP outs, senior designated hitter Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) singled him in. Another Osprey error extended the inning, and sophomore left fielder Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) took advantage with an RBI-single to center field for the Pioneers' second run of the game.

William Paterson had the tying run at third base with two outs in the top of the ninth, but a groundout ended the game.

Haughney was 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Freshman catcher Brady Pevny (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and sophomore first baseman Mike Sasso (West Orange, N.J./Montclair Kimberley) were both 2-for-4.

Jensen (1-1) struck out four and walked two on the mound.

Sophomore designated hitter Matt Mangarella finished 2-for-3 and scored a run for Stockton. Senior Brendan Stout (4-1) allowed eight hits and two runs (one earned) over 6.2 innings, striking out six and walking one. Sophomore Ryan Adamski tossed the final 2.1 innings, scattering three hits for his first save.

Game Two

Sophomore Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) pitched all 9.0 innings, scattering six hits while striking out two and walking a pair during a 3-2 win.

The two teams traded zeros on the scoreboard until Abate walked to start the top of the fifth inning, stole second, was sacrificed to third by freshman right fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) and scored via senior third baseman Rob Pasternak's (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) squeeze.

Another leadoff walk, this one to sophomore shortstop K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) during the ninth, led to a stolen base, a base advanced thanks to a flyout and a Kenny RBI-single. A stolen base and wild pitch left Kenny at third base, and he trotted home when Sasso singled through the left side.

The Ospreys used a single, walk and wild pitch to set up a two-run single by Mangarella, but a groundout stranded the tying run at first base.

Sasso and Kenny were both 2-for-4 with an RBI for WP. Colasante improved to 1-1.

Senior center fielder Mike Bush led Stockton offensively with his 2-for-4 effort, scoring a run. Senior Brandon Trainor (1-3) tossed all but one out for the Ospreys, surrendering the three runs on four hits while posting three strikeouts and two walks.

William Paterson will compete at Ramapo Monday, April 7, at 3:30 a.m.
