Tomcats drop a pair to PAC-leading Presidents

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) allowed just two runs over six innings in the second contest, but the Washington and Jefferson College baseball team kept the Thiel offense quiet, as the Tomcats dropped a pair of games to the defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion Presidents in PAC play Saturday at Ross Memorial Park.

Thiel moved to 6-14 overall and 0-9 in PAC play, while W&J improved to 13-8 on the season and 8-1 in league action.

In the first game, junior Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) allowed five earned runs in the loss, giving up nine hits in six innings of work. Eddie Nogay went the full seven innings to pick up the win for the Presidents, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.

After a scoreless top of the first, the Presidents opened up scoring with one run in the bottom half of the inning, with a double to left giving the home team a 1-0 lead.

W&J continued to attack with three more runs on a pair of hits in the fourth, capped by a home run and a pair of singles.
The Presidents added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-0, and sealed the win after Nogay induced a ground ball after allowing a two-out walk in the top of the seventh.

Elko was handed the loss in the second game, going six innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs, while counterpart Brian O'Neill earned the win as he held the Tomcats to five hits over six frames.

The Presidents jumped on the board in the second as a Tomcat error allowed a run to score to give the home side the early advantage.

After a double in the first by Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity), O'Neill settled down, retiring the Tomcats in order through five, while the Presidents offense plated two more runs off Elko in the fourth to build a three-run lead.

Sophomore Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina) led off the top of the seventh with a single to center field, but W&J reliever Kyle McLain came in for three straight outs to secure the win.

Passafiume went 2-for-6 with a double during the two contests against the PAC-leading Presidents, while sophomore Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) also went 2-for-6 with a pair of singles and a stolen base.

Thiel returns to PAC play tomorrow when the Tomcats host the Presidents for the final game of the three-game set. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
