FINAL: TUFTS 12, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 7
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Sophomores Mike Barry (Sudbury, Mass.) and Matt Moser (Great Falls, Va.) each rapped out a pair of hits and drove in three runs as 24th-ranked Tufts extended its winning streak to nine straight with a 12-7 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Monday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
The visiting Jumbos (17-1) sent 11 men to the plate in their first at-bat in grabbing a 7-0 lead, as Barry laced a three-run double and Moser followed two batters later with a two-run triple that highlighted the uprising. Tufts extended that margin to 11-0 by batting around in the top of the fourth, as an RBI double by Moser and a two-run two-bagger by junior Connor McDavitt (Holden, Mass.) sandwiched a run-scoring single off the bat of freshman Tom Petry (Worcester, Mass.). The host Buccaneers (8-9) plated single runs in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Tommy Walls (Hawthorne, N.J.) and a steal of home in the sixth by senior Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.), and the Jumbos closed out their scoring in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by freshman Oscar Kutch (Houston, Tex.). Massachusetts Maritime added a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by freshman Aidan Desrosiers (North Attleboro, Mass.), who added a two-run single as part of a four-run eighth inning rally that included a run-scoring single by senior Devin Rudolph (Carver, Mass.) and an RBI groundout by Walls that accounted for the final score.
Senior Nick Cutsumpas (White Plains, N.Y.) also plated a run for the visitors with a sacrifice fly, as junior Willie Archibald (Milton, Mass.), the first of seven Tufts' pitchers, picked up his first victory of the season by retiring all six batters he faced over the first two frames, including two via strikeout. Desrosiers, Walls, Lee and freshman Terrence Mudie (Barnstable, Mass.) each had two hits as a part of a 10-hit Buccaneer attack in the setback, as freshman Alex Rozak (Plymouth, Mass.) took the loss on the mound while fanning three over the first 3 2/3 innings.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Lasell in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Tufts hosts Trinity in opener of a three-game New England Small College Athletic Conference weekend series on Friday afternoon in Medford, Mass. beginning at 3:00.
