Privateers Sweep Conference Doubleheader Over NYU-Poly

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) – The Maritime baseball team defeated Skyline Conference opponent NYU-Poly in both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Reinhart Field, winning the opener 7-1 behind a strong pitching performance by junior Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) and taking the nightcap, 14-3, thanks in part to a five-RBI game by sophomore Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown).
 
The Privateers move to 6-12 overall with the victories, 3-2 in Skyline action, while the Jays fall to 0-8 (0-2 Skyline).
 
In the first game, Alsdorf got the complete game win after pitching 9.0 innings and allowing one run on just four hits with 11 strikeouts. It was his second consecutive start with 11 K's. He moves to 2-2 on the season.
 
Freshman Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored, while senior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) was also 3-for-4, but with one RBI and a run scored. Junior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) also plated a run for the Privateers.
 
Poly's lone run of the game came off the bat of senior Nick Abbruzzese, who clocked a solo home run just over the right field fence in the top of the third inning. On the mound, senior Nate Albers suffered the loss after pitching 7.0 innings and allowing seven runs (two earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts. In relief, junior Kian Downes through 1.0 scoreless inning.
 
In game two, Woodburn led the way by going 3-for-3 with a double, 5 RBIs and two runs scored. McLaughlin was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, while junior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (3-for-3 with three runs) and sophomore Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) both knocked in a run apiece.
 
Senior Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) picked up his second win of the season and moved to 2-0 after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Classmate Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) and sophomore David Ramos (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg) both pitched one inning of relief and had one strikeout apiece to help preserve the victory. 
 
Abbruzzese was 3-for-4 for the Jays in the second game and plated two more runs and Downes was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Senior Christian Conroy suffered the loss after allowing 11 runs (eight earned) over 3.2 innings pitched with two Ks.
 
The Privateers return to the field this Saturday, April 5, when they host Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Reinhart Field
