Westfield State Topples Nichols College, 11-2

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore left fielder Connor Sheridan (South Hadley, MA) was 3 for 4 with two RBI, and sophomore center fielder Dan McCormack (Shelton, CT) was 2 for 3 with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases to lead Westfield State University to an 11-2 non-conference baseball victory over Nichols College on Wednesday, April 9.

Westfield evens its record at 9-9 heading into Thursday's non-conference home contest vs. UMass Darmouth. Nichols, which has yet to play a home game this season, drops to 3-16.

McCormack, a 5-5, 160-pound transfer from Elms College, also displayed his defensive and base running skills. He threw out a Bison at home plate to end the seventh inning and scored the game-winning run in the fifth by sprinting home from second base on a sacrifice fly

Junior right fielder Pat McWilliams, who also threw out a runner at home, actually drove in two runs on the sacrifice fly to deep center field to give the Owls a 3-2 lead through five innings.

The Owls tacked on two more runs in the sixth and crossed the plate six times on six hits and three walks in the seventh inning.

Other multiple hitters in Westfield's 13-hit attack were sophomore catcher E.G. McMillan (2 for 3) and sophomore first baseman Danny DiMatteo (2 for 5, double).

Jeff Sylvester and Scott Iacobucci both belted a double and single in four at bats for the Bison, who collected nine hits.

In a key statistic, Westfield's three pitchers did not issue a walk while Nichols' four pitchers walked eight.

Sophomore Tommy Nowlan was credited with the pitching victory. He entered the game in the top of the third and hurled six complete innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three.
