First-Year Pitcher Helps Albion Salvage MIAA Split

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College Coach Scott Carden maintains his team outplayed Calvin College Thursday, but all the Britons got to show for it was a split of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader.

Starting pitcher Dylan Woolley scattered a run on five hits and a walk over six innings to lift Albion to a 4-1 game two victory. The Britons badly needed Woolley's outing after they lost a 5-3 decision in game one as Calvin plated three eighth-inning runs on two walks and a hit batter with the bases loaded.

"I thought we played well all day. It just so happens in one inning we gave up too many runs," Carden said. "We didn't execute well enough offensively in a few innings."

Balks led to a pair of Albion runs in game two as Spencer Bonofiglio scored in the second and Davin Montgomery did likewise in the fifth. Shane Lindemann produced a RBI single in the third and Kyle Kowal laid down a sacrifice bunt in the fifth. Brendan Diamond and Michael Fischbach finished with two hits apiece.

"I thought we came at them offensively early in the game," Carden said.

Albion stranded 12 runners in game one. The Britons left the bases loaded in the fourth and they left two on base in the seventh and eighth innings.  Davin Montgomery, Bonofiglio, and designated hitter Ben Crawford collected two hits apiece.

Albion and Calvin are scheduled to complete the four-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday with a doubleheader of seven inning games.
