LeTourneau Snaps 19-Game Losing Streak to Local Rival in 12-1 Win Over Texas-Tyler

After tying the game in the fourth, the LeTourneau baseball team scored the next 11 runs en route to a 12-1 win over University of Texas-Tyler on Friday night in Conrad-Vernon Field to snap a 19-game losing skid to the area rival. The last LeTourneau win came on April 14, 2006.

The YellowJackets (20-9, 14-8) – who had been held scoreless in 14-consecutive innings - broke loose for 12 runs and 20 hits against four Texas-Tyler pitchers. Chris Bertram had four hits; plus Bryce Griffin and David Perkins each added three hits to pace the attack.

The offensive onslaught gave ample support to LeTourneau starter Curt Copeland, who won his fourth-straight start to improve to 5-2. Copeland held Texas-Tyler to five hits and struck out hit five in the win.

Texas-Tyler (10-19, 8-14 ASC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Dillon Berry. Billy Lirely led the Patriots attack with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate and starting pitcher Cason Adams, who falls to 0-3, was roughed up in 4.2 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs – all earned as he faced 24 batters.

The YellowJackets tied the game in the fourth inning when Dillon Yates drove in Ryan Bertram on a sacrifice fly with one out. LeTourneau took the lead in the fifth when they sent nine batters to the plate en route to scoring four runs – two of which came in on atwo-RBI single by David Perkins.

LeTourneau extended its lead with three runs win the seventh for an 8-1 and four more in the eighth two out for the final margin. Kirby Cantalamessa and Ben Boles each pitched an inning of scoreless relief – in follow up to Copeland - to close out the contest. 

The two teams wrap up the weekend series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
