#23 Wheaton Takes Two From Emerson, 10-0 & 18-0

Lyons 22-7-1 overall, 11-2 in NEWMAC play

WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team, ranked No. 23 in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 national poll, earned a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victories against Emerson College by scores of 10-0 and 18-0 on Saturday evening at Victory Field.

WHEATON 10, EMERSON 0

Lyons' senior right-hander Nick Filloramo (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) hurled a complete-game, six-hit shutout alongside a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Filloramo recorded four 1-2-3 innings in the game (1st, 4th, 6th, 8th).

Emerson starter Josh Powers (Brookline, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) took the loss on 6 2/3 innings pitched, six hits, five runs (all earned), six walks and two punchouts.

Tied 0-0 in the fifth, Wheaton broke through with three runs on three hits and one runner left on base. Junior Zach Horton (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) registered an RBI single up the middle, sophomore Brett Fontaine (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) had a run-producing double to right-center and junior Justin Peluso (North Reading, Mass./Saint John's Prep) plated a runner with a a sacrifice bunt for the 3-0 advantage.

Sophomore Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and junior Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) added RBI walks in the seventh and freshman Joshua LaJoie (Somers, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and juniors Zach Bombard (Belchertown, Mass./Cathedral) and Tyler Contillo (Montville, Conn./Montville) and Horton all had RBI singles. Peluso also plated another run in the eighth with a sacrifice bunt to third base to account for all of the scoring.

Wheaton finished the contest with 12 hits total including multi-hit games from Bombard, Horton and senior Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

WHEATON 18, EMERSON 0

Freshman Jack Fant (Independence, Va./McLean) improved to 2-0 on the season throwing eight innings while scattering five hits and recording a career-high 11 strikeouts. Sophomore Steven Consiglio (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) tossed a clean ninth to secure the sweep over Emerson.

Sophomore Jack Capotorto (Brielle, N.J./Communications HS) suffered the loss on seven innings pitched, eight hits, eight runs (all earned), three walks and two strikeouts.

Wheaton scored 18 runs in game two on 17 hits which included five doubles and four triples.

Bombard went 3-for-6 with three runs and a career-high four RBI from the leadoff spot, while Lavanchy, sophomore Mike Beneduce (North Kingstown, R.I./Moses Brown School), freshman Joseph Santigate (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and LaJoie all had multi-hit games.

Wheaton (22-7-1, 11-2 NEWMAC) travels to Southern Maine tomorrow for a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup. Emerson (3-20, 1-11 NEWMAC) hosts Springfield College on Sunday for a NEWMAC contest at 3 p.m.
