Spartans Split Twinbill with Thomas

More news about: Castleton

Bangor, Maine - The Spartans were beaten in walk-off fashion for the second time in two days in game one, falling 3-2 to North Atlantic Conference foe Thomas in 12 innings, but took their frustrations out on the Terriers in game two, trouncing the hosts 9-0.

Castleton received a pair of stellar pitching outings out of starters Adam Greenlese and Devin Hayes. In game one, Greenlese went nine innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits and four walks. The senior struck out seven batters in the no-decision. Game two saw freshman Devin Hayes toss a gem. The first-year struck out eight Terriers over seven innings of work, allowing just two hits in the complete game shutout.

Macyn Clifford went 2-for-7 on the day with a solo home run while Joe Borowski went 3-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored. Allen White finished with two of the Spartans' five stolen bases on the day.

Thomas got out to an early lead in game one, taking a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. Nik Beeson ripped an RBI double that brought home Anree Benitez to give the Terriers the lead.

Castleton would tie the game in the top of the fourth on a solo shot off the bat of Macyn Clifford. The Spartans' left fielder clobbered the ball off a pitch from C.J. Pendleton to make it 1-1.

Thomas responded in the bottom of the inning by bringing home a run to take a 2-1 lead. Derek Kane led off the inning with a triple and was brought home two batters later on a sacrifice fly to right field.

In the top of the fifth, Castleton tied the game again. Joe Borowski and Dan Errico provided a one-two punch for the Spartans, ripping back-to-back doubles to knot the contest at 2-2 entering the bottom of the fifth.

Greenlese mowed through the Thomas lineup and kept the Terriers from scoring the winning run, forcing extra innings.  The Spartans nearly went ahead in the top of the seventh after a Matt McNamee double put runners on second and third with one out, but the Terriers worked their way out of the jam to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the 12th inning, Robert Gould gave up a leadoff single to Benitez that would come back to bite him. The leadoff man advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home to score the winning run on a single off the bat of Beeson. Thomas earned the 3-2 on the walk-off single, handing the Spartans their second consecutive walk-off loss.

In game two, the Spartans turned the ball over to freshman pitcher Devin Hayes, and he did not disappoint. Hayes shut down the Thomas lineup, allowing just a pair of hits and keeping them off the board for the entire game.

Castleton jumped out to a two-run lead in the third, when Borowski brought home Allen White and Dylan Watts with a two-run double. In the next inning, the Spartans extended their lead on an RBI fielder's choice by Watts and an RBI single from Tyler Lord, making it 4-0.

In the fifth, the Spartans tacked on four more runs to their lead. Chaz Millet ripped a bases loaded double that brought home two, and both he and Macyn Clifford came around to score on a fielding error on the next play, making it 8-0. The Spartans tacked on a ninth run on a McNamee RBI single in the sixth to increase their lead to 9-0.

With the split, Castleton moves to 13-7 on the season, with a 10-3 mark in the NAC. The Spartans will return to action on Sunday, April 13 when they finish their four-game set with the Terriers. The doubleheader will begin at 11:00am.
